Back or lay

When you "back" a selection (be it an individual, a team, horse, dog or other), you are betting that it will win. This is just like betting with conventional bookies.

When you "lay" it, you are betting against it winning. For example, if you're betting in a market on which team is going to win the Premiership and you lay Man Utd, you offer odds to other punters who wish to back Man Utd. If Man Utd don't win, then you pick up the backer's stake. If Man Utd wins, then you pay out. This is what bookmakers traditionally do.

Choose odds

With Betfair there is always a choice of what odds to accept. If you want better odds than are currently available, you can place an order for a better price, but be realistic because there has to be somebody prepared to lay the bet at those odds, and vice versa.

Take a look at the odds before a game and you will see them change as visitors back and lay their bets. The odds often improve nearer to the off, as there are more people in the market.

Commission

You do not pay tax at Betfair, and commission is only paid on your net winnings on each market. This is particularly beneficial if you have multiple bets on a single market such as the Premiership Winner market. Some of your bets may win, some may lose, however you only pay commission on your NET winnings. If your bets in a particular market amount to a net loss, you do not pay commission. The normal commission is  5%.

What is a BOT?

Here is a simple example of lay betting

In the 2.08 at Hackney you think that trap 1 will not win the race ( in other words you have 5 dogs on your side!) this is called a lay bet. The current odds for trap 1 to win is 4/1. You lay this for £10. If trap 1 does not win the race you make £10  if your judgement is wrong and it wins the race then you will lose £40 ( 4 x £10)

Example using UGS

We still want to lay Trap 1 in the 2.08, but to be honest 4/1 is a bit high for us, and we only like to lay at a maximum of 3/1. In UGS set the maximum lay price settings to 3/1, if the current odds are floating around the 7/2 mark and dips to 3/1 or under UGS will lay the bet in seconds. If the odds fail to get to 3/1 or under UGS will not lay the bet as per your instructions and will ignore this race.

Advanced Example using UGS

Continuing with the above, we have established that our max lay price is 3/1. We now have to decide how much we wish to lay so we set our stake settings to £2. At this point our maximum liability if the trap meets our requirement (of 3/1) is £6. We win £2 if the dog fails to win the race or we lose £6 if it wins

But we don't just want our BOT to take 3/1 whenever. Its essential that we are well within the action with just minutes to go to get the best price, so we use our timer settings, and set it to  "Do not get involved until 3 minutes to go" this stops the BOT from taking a false or silly price 10 minutes before the off which somebody has tried to bluff people with.

So in this instance we are saying..... 

1) Place a £2 lay bet 
2) Only if the dog is 3/1 or less
3) Don't start getting involved until 3 minutes before the off
